Why do goalies cut the ice in their crease?

In addition, since I rent a rink and play for 1-1 1/2 hours and the ice isn’t zamboni’d half way through the game… should i as a goalie do this?

DEVILS WIN
i dunnno why they do it, to make the puck go slower?

The puck slides less when goalies chew the ice in the crease. It involves something regarding friction.

1. It slows up the puck
2. Tradition; every rookie goalie sees the veterans doing it, so they do too.

We do it for three reasons. One, it slows the puck. Two, it prevents the goalie from sliding too far when they come across the crease on part other than skates. And, lastly superstition. If it is not done, it will surely affect your game!!

Also they will pile the scraped ice along the red line of the crease to help stop a puck from crossing it.

you scrape the crease to prevent friction with the ice and your pads. if you dont scrape, then the excess water gets into your equipment (legs, skates, and most importantly, your pants if you land on your ****. (Im a goalie)

The first thing I do when I get to the crease is do a scrape. For one, it helps get rid of any water residue (this time of year is particularly tough because the weather is in many cases warmer and more humid, which inhibits the water from freezing (or you get a zamboni driver who thinks there’s a swim meet up next). Two, it helps stretch the leg muscles. Three, it provides a smoother surface to move around on. I like to have a bit of snow on the posts so my skate blades don’t get nicked up too badly.
Personally, I don’t know too many goalies that don’t do this before games.

This is done to actually INCREASE friction, not decrease it. A freshly zam’ed ice surface is very slick, and doesn’t provide any traction when the goalie is not on his skates. By roughing up the surface, the goalie is able to move around a lot better when he is down on the ice.
Simple as that.
Back in the day before ice girls who remove the excess snow from around the goal, goalies used to make a snow “speed bump” if you will along the crease, but the NHL caught on, and have taken steps to prevent that.

so they dont slid far our from the creast trust me im a goalie

they do it to reduce their sliding along the ice, they want some sliding but they want to be able to control it, the cutting just increases friction.
