What’s the tougher sport: Ice Hockey or Rugby?

I haven’t watched an actual rugby game, but from youtube, it looks pretty tough. I would say the big hits in rugby are probably more brutal than most of hockey’s big hits, but in hockey your going faster and falling on ice (instead of grass/turf, not that that wouldn’t also hurt). Also there’s the fact that hockey is VERY tiring (most players only stay on the ice playing about 2 minutes at a time at the most.) And getting hit in the face with a stick can’t be fun, let alone a puck. On the other hand it seems like rugby fights are WAY tougher than hockey fights.
Since I don’t watch rugby, I don’t know how often the fights happen. If they happen about as often as in hockey (you could expect to see one at least every few games), then I would have to go with rugby. If they aren’t as common, then I would have to go with hockey. What do you guys think?

I don’t watch rugby, I used to watch it when I was channel surfing but it doesn’t come on my TV anymore fore some reason.
Rugby looks wayyyyyyyyyy tougher, they hit without padding on, and there is barely (if any) stoppage in play. They just keep running back and forth.

According to this study from sports scientists, hockey ranks #2 and rugby ranks #13.
I am not too sure I agree fully because rugby players look at football players as sissies but this study also takes into account other factors (hand/eye, agility, endurance, strength, power, speed etc).

shittt. hockey needs speed, smarts, agility, a good pair of eyes, good coordination, and a small amount of homo-sexuality. rugby only needs broad shoulders and no care in the world about concussions

Like you, I’ve never seen a rugby game, but my cousin plays it and my neighbors play it and it looks tougher than hockey. Hockey is sprints and hits, but with pads on. Rugby is like football, except no whistles and no pads. They’re constantly moving and tackling and getting hit incredibly hard without pads. So, I’m going to say rugby is physically tougher. Other aspects, such as hand-eye coordination, may play in hockey’s favor, though.
